Since its founding in 1930, Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) has been considered one of the best basketball leagues on the American continent. It is estimated that, annually, the BSN directly impacts the Puerto Rican economy by approximately $18-21 million dollars.
It is public knowledge that during the past decade of the 2000s, the league's economy fell substantially and stopped its rise among basketball fans in Puerto Rico. After some adjustments to its bylaws by the BSN board, which in turn allowed the arrival of new team owners (such as urban artists like Bad Bunny, Anuel AA and Ozuna), the league enjoyed new popularity in the 2020s among Puerto Ricans which had not been achieved for a long time. This boom caused many former NBA players to come to the league to play as imports. DeMarcus Cousins, Hassan Whiteside, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Brandon Knight, Tyreke Evans, Norris Cole, Elfrid Payton, Greg Monroe and Michael Beasley were just a few of those who arrived.
During the 2023 season, BSN indicated that more than +990.3K fans visited its stadiums during the five months of competition. In addition, it reported an improvement in its television ratings of +32.8% and +3% share versus the 2022 season on Telemundo platforms. Likewise, it reported 237.2 million impressions, 52 million video views, 5 million web visits and 1.7 million sessions in its application thanks to a digital universe of 1.6 million users on its social networks, site website and application. For these reasons, the BSN has once again revalidated itself as the favorite sports product of Puerto Rican fans and advertising.
Using a market-approach valuation method, WIN ranked from 1-12 all twelve franchises of the BSN during the 2023 season. To do so, six metrics were evaluated: franchise sporting history, socioeconomic indicators for each market of the twelve participating franchises, approximate operating revenues for each franchise, past sales from the last decade (2013-2023), commercial partners for each franchise, and social media growth for each franchise during the 2023 season.
